TREES FOR HAITI - Reforestation for a Better Life

deforestation in Hati
Global Village is pleased to announce Trees for Haiti, assisting in ongoing efforts of this Caribbean island nation to improve their quality of life by replanting trees. Through the efforts of an anonymous friend we will be able to match donations up to $25,000.00. Continuing until December 31, 2007 we hope to raise $50,000.00 to help solve this environmental crisis.

Current Environmental Situation

Extreme deforestation has resulted in drastic levels of soil depletion and water shortages. Immediate intervention can help the situation from worsening. Ecologists predict that the downward spiral of poverty and environmental degradation will reach the point of no return unless something is done now.

Global Village will be sending donations periodically as they accumulate to help stop this trend and reverse the deforestation of the land.

Haitian Poverty Contributes to Problem

The poorest nation in the western hemisphere, Haiti knows what to do to resolve the crisis, but lacks the resources to do so. Global Village plans to support the tree planting efforts of the nonprofit organizations Konpay, the Quixote Center and the Lambi Fund.

First we will focus on Konpay's partner organization MEPE, The Children's Movement for the Protection of the Environment, based in Cyvadier, Haiti.

How Can You Help?

Direct Donations : You can give donations in the form of cash, check, money order and charges to Global Village Trees for Haiti. Don't forget we have matching funds for the first $25,000.00.

Purchases: For the duration of this project all profits from the sale of Haitian coffee and authentic Haitian arts and crafts will go to the project. Administrative costs will be absorbed by Global Village allowing 100% of the amount collected and raised from sales to go directly to Haiti.

Donations to Date

As of mid-March 2008, we have raised $ 48,650 for the Trees for Haiti project.

Children's Movement for the Protection of the Environment

Children are taught about the environment and directly participate in the planting of trees.  MEPE intends to plant 11,000 trees through our support.
